Tara Gary

Biography

            
Tara Gary is a Health Interventions Educator and LGBT Outreach Coordinator for Southwest Louisiana Area Health Education Center (SWLAHEC) in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The mission of SWLAHEC is to improve health status through access to information, education and health services. She has been with the nonprofit organization for 4 years. She was selected as the first AHEC of a Staff Member of 2016.

Tara has several different roles at SWLAHEC. She does HIV Prevention, Education, Testing and Counseling in Region 5 with the Louisiana Office of Public Health STD/HIV Program and LGBT Outreach/Education with Navigators for a Healthy Louisiana LGBT Enrollment Project. Through outreach, she makes referrals to certified LGBT affirming navigators across the state to assist consumers with enrolling in health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. She also manages social media platforms for 3 different programs, along with the organization’s social media platforms and website as well. She previously worked in the mental health field as a mental health tech.

Tara currently serves on the Louisiana AIDS Advocacy Network board. She is an active advocate in the HIV and LGBT community.  She is from Jennings, Louisiana and currently resides in Sulphur, Louisiana, with her wife Marcell.
